Message from the Associate Dean

Welcome to the 19th PGME Annual Conference.

The Postgraduate Medical Education Department has been organizing the Conference since 1996. The objective of these conferences is to provide postgraduate medical students the opportunity to listen to and interact with national and international experts. It also provides a forum to share experiences and recommend ways to improve standards of postgraduate medical education in the country.  The Conference also provides distinctive opportunity to the postgraduate trainees to present their research work and they also receive awards for the best presentation and research.

This year the theme is ‘Enhancing Academic Standards for Quality Care’ and has been chosen to provide a mechanism for quality improvement in medical education, in a broad context, to be applied by institutions responsible for medical education, and in programmes throughout the continuum of medical education. This will also include important concepts like, International patient safety goals, which are now considered a core component for quality care.

Discussion about appropriate academic organizational structures would outline authorities and responsibilities between the hospital administration and the teaching programs. There would also be discussion about appropriate policies and procedures in postgraduate teaching and research programs that lead to the enhancement of quality of care. Integrating these into the patient safety program of the hospital would not only enhance the academic standards but will also enhance the quality of patient care.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Organizing Committee for organizing this event.  I would also like to thank the editorial board of JPMA for publishing the abstracts in its special edition.
