Neurosurgery

Undergraduate Medical Education

MBBS
Neurosurgery is not a mandatory undergraduate rotation although over the years it has grown in popularity amongst medical students within an outside Aga Khan University for elective and selective rotations. The student who chooses neurosurgery works closely with the residents and attending as an integral member of the team. The residents have responsibility for teaching these students and interns.  These interactions with students are an important guide to mentoring for the residents.

Postgraduate Medical Education

Internship Programme
Internship is available in the section of Neurosurgery. There is extensive clinical experience, on the wards, in the operating room and in clinic. The student attends conferences and rounds with the residents and attending. Three to four interns rotate through Neurosurgery in every cycle for two to three months each.  Attention is given to educate these interns in evaluation and management of Neurosurgery problems, including didactive sessions.  Several of these interns go on to apply for neurosurgery residency positions every year.

Residency Programme
The Neurosurgery offers a five year structured residency programme after two years of General Surgery training.  Currently seven residents are working in the residency program, while two candidates are selected each year. The academic activities involve multidisciplinary grand rounds, neuropathology, neuroradiology meetings, and journal clubs.  The alumni of this residency programme are currently working at various key positions nationally and internationally.

Fellowship Programme
