Introduction

The Department of Psychiatry of Aga Khan University has on board five full time psychiatrists and two full time psychologists, as well as two part-time psychiatrists and one part-time psychologist. Two of the faculty members are trained child psychiatrists and one faculty member specializes in psychiatry of the elderly. The psychiatric services include a 18-bedded acute care short-term adult psychiatric unit, a day care programme, 24 hours emergency service, and consultation/referral service, in addition to 33 weekly outpatient clinics. An occupational therapy programme is attached to the inpatient and day care services.

The treatment programme of the department is eclectically oriented and utilises a bio-psychosocial model. Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, consultation and various treatment modalities are provided both in an inpatient as well as in outpatient settings. Treatment modalities include pharmacotherapy, E.C.T. individual and family therapy and behavioral management techniques. Child psychiatry service is provided mainly on an outpatient basis. Patients in need of alcohol and drug detoxification treatment may be admitted on a selective basis.

Our Mission

To evolve into a department that would provide high quality health care, sensitive and responsive to the mental health needs of Pakistan and its people and in the context of existing socio-cultural and religious norms. A department which would be considered a center of excellence for mental health research in the country and one that would work in close collaboration with other departments of AKU as well as national and international institutions. A department which would be a leader in the training of future psychiatrists and other mental health professionals of Pakistan and the developing world, employing a holistic, bio-psychosocial and ethical approach to patient care.

A department whose goals and objectives would complement the overall mission and goals of the Aga Khan University.
