It serves the clinical laboratory network of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) that caters to the needs of the whole country through its more than 150 collection points and five STAT laboratories. The laboratory is one of the first laboratories in the world to receive the ISO 9001:2000 certification and the Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA).
The Department has six major sections: Histopathology, Haematology, Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Molecular Pathology.
The pathology faculty of 40 includes five professors, nine associate professors, eight assistant professors, six instructors, nine instructors and three part-time lecturers.
The Department of Pathology provides a complete array of routine and specialised services. The services are related to all six brances of pathology including haematology, blood bank, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, histopathology, cytopathology and molecular pathology. Over 800 routine and specialized tests such as general biochemical profiles, enzyme profiles, endocrine assays, karyotyping, flow cytometry and HLA typing are available along with several other special tests which are not available elsewhere in Pakistan. Laboratory testing is also provided for the diagnosis and management of haematological disorders such as anaemias and thrombocytic disorders. Research Activities / Programmes
The major research interests of the Department are in infectious diseases and cancer. Research programmes in mycobacterial infections, antimicrobial resistance and health care associated infections are well established. In addition the Department also has research programmes in cancer particularly molecular genetics of carcinoma and breast cancer. The Department has research collaboration with several universities in UK and USA.
Educational Programmes / Undergraduate and Postgraduate Training
Department of Pathology caters to four different residency programmes under one roof. Training programmes in all the disciplines of pathology (i.e. Chemical Pathology, haematology, Histopathology and Microbiology) are recognised by CPSP. Almost two decades down the road, the residency programme has grown much from its infancy. The current strength of residents in 2008 has gone up to 31 from the initial number of two in 1988.
Trainee Technologist Programme
The one-year trainee technologist programme is unique in Paksitan. In this 26 trainee mostly with BSc and MSc qualifications, are taken each year. This highly successful program started with a handful of trainees in 1985. It provides training not only for routine work, but also for meeting and maintaining high quality standards required by the international health care systems.
