Advanced Level Course on Curriculum Development


The course focuses on the purposes and design of different curricula used in Health Professions Education (HPE) with emphasis on the participants’ involvement within the context of their own profession and institution.

Pre Requisite

Introductory Short Course in Health Professions Education (ISC-HPE)

Eligibility

  • Healthcare professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Allied Health
  • Proven interest/responsibility in Health Professions Education
  • Teaching experience in Health Professions Education: Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry or Allied Health

Duration

The course is spread over nine weeks, beginning March 24, 2014 and concluding on May 23, 2014. The course time is scheduled as follows:

  • Two weeks part time pre-reading
  • One week full-time intensive face-to-face component at AKU: April 7 to 11, 2014
  • Six weeks for independent study and completion of written assignment

Learning  Objectives

By the end of the Advanced Level Course on Curriculum Development, the students will have the knowledge, skills and academic grounding necessary to:

  • Apply the theoretical underpinnings and educational philosophies related to curriculum development
  • Identify the factors that shape curricula and how they can be re-aligned to educational needs
  • Plan, critique and improve curricula
  • Contest and contribute to the body of knowledge related to HPE curricula, locally and internationally

Educational Strategies

The educational strategies are multi-modal with focus on active learning and requiring critical thinking by students, offered through interactive plenaries, individual and group presentations and assignments, workshop formats, exercises, small group activities and on-line submission of assignments. Mid-course feedback is provided.

Assessment

For the course on Curriculum Development, assessment is based on the following:

  • In the face-to-face component, assessment will be through continuous observation of participation and contributions, individual and group assignments/presentations, and end-of-course assessment.
  • In the distance learning component assessment will be based on completion and grading of a 2000 to 3000 – word individual written assignment.
  • The face-to-face component and the independent study written assignment (ISWA) have to be satisfactorily completed separately.
