Three-Day Workshop on Advanced Statistics

Aga Khan University's Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Department of Community Health Sciences, recently conducted a successful workshop on advanced statistics. Dr Ravindra M. Pandey, Professor and Head of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, and consultant, International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) Trust was invited to conduct this three full-day workshop on cluster randomised controlled trials and factor analysis. The workshop was sponsored by INCLEN Trust and the Malaria Vaccine Initiative (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). The 35 participants in this workshop were mainly clinicians, trainees and students from various departments of AKU (Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Paediatrics, Microbiology and Pathology, and CHS) as well as other institutions in Pakistan (e.g. Dow University Health Sciences and Green Star Social Marketing). The sessions were interactive, and challenging statistical concepts were taught with great expertise. Hands-on training on mock datasets was introduced on Acluster software. The overall feedback of the sessions was graded as excellent by the workshop participants.

Dr Tazeen H. Jafar, Director, CEU, commented "We need to build statistical expertise in the region, and appreciate Dr Pandey's valuable contribution towards this important goal. Moreover, his passion and commitment to teaching, noted by all the participants of the workshop, is most appreciated. The fact that Dr Pandey was able to successfully communicate complex statistical concepts in a short span of time attests to his abilities as a great teacher. We are fortunate that our region has this great resource, which we hope to tap into periodically."

The CEU is committed to extend AKU's and INCLEN's mission of promoting research and research training in Pakistan and other emerging nations.
