Continuing Medical Education (CME)

We conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions for faculty and learning for our students is hands-on through joint presentations with faculty members. Our Department dedicates 2 hours per week continuing education for all involved in clinical service delivery. This provides an opportunity for shared learning through formal and informal presentations.

Our doctors facilitate CME for nurses in both formal lecture and practical bed-side settings. This combination helps our nurses to cultivate a strong understanding of the connections between scientific evidence and clinical practice.

Our Department provides continuous professional development in the area of paediatrics and child health to technical staff and the medical fraternity associated with Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi (AKUH, N).  All staff are encouraged and supported to undergo continuing emergency care training on regular basis and participation in professional and scientific fora locally and overseas within limits of available financial resources and merit.

Our well qualified faculty is dedicated to offering the highest quality of instruction in teaching and is simultaneously involved in delivery of general and specialist paediatric services in the hospital.  Research and scholarship involvement are a must for faculty members.  Many of the members also sit on important national and international bodies.

Research and Centres of Excellence
The department undertakes research within the broad University focus of social and economic determinants of health. AKU has identified six Centres of Excellence where we expect to be world renowned for excelling in service delivery, education and research. Although contributor to all of them, our primary roles are in Women and Child Health and Early Human Development.

Faculty members have also continued to develop and express research interests in their different fields of sub-specialization.
