Museums, art galleries and auction houses are vying to present artworks by resident or diaspora regional artists in an attempt to offer a positive visual antidote to the increasingly negative image of the region held by the Western public and consolidated by international media coverage.
‘Collecting and Exhibiting Contemporary ‘Middle Eastern’ Art – Legacies, Challenges, Opportunities’ examines the complex dynamics that underpin any engagement with contemporary ‘Middle Eastern’ art today. Topics will address the reasons behind the recent surge of interest in the topic, analyse the dynamics of contemporary ‘Middle Eastern’ art collecting and spotlight the challenges individual artists face in trying to make their own voices heard amidst still powerful western-centric paradigms, art-critical constructs and curatorial attitudes.
