​​Dr Kathryn Spellman Poots speaks at the House of Lords

​Dr Kathryn Spellman Poots, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at The Aga Khan University, Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations will deliver a lecture at the House of Lords, Committee Room G, entitled ‘Gender and Identity in Muslim Contexts'. Organised by CMF Women, the lecture will take place on 22nd October 2009 at 6.00pm

Dr. Spellman Poots will explore the diversity of gender identities, expectations and realities in various Muslim cultures. Challenging stereotypical understandings of gender relations in Muslim societies, she will highlight several historical and contemporary constructs of gender roles and examine the various ways that Muslim women and men have transgressed, reproduced and challenged gender hierarchies by engaging in scholarship, activism and the creative arts.
