The 12 November 2010 issue of the Khaleej Times, a daily English language newspaper published in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and covering regional and international news, featured a recent article about the Aga Khan University Institute of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC). The article, Understanding Muslim Civilisations, highlighted the imbalance of knowledge flow between the ‘West’ and other countries over the past 200 years and the efforts of institutions like AKU-ISMC to correct for this through strengthening of research and teaching about the heritages of Muslim societies.
Manager for Publications and Editing, Sikeena Ahmed, noted the need for a greater understanding about Muslim cultures as they have evolved over time, and the attention that is necessitated by the challenges of contemporary societies. Her own experiences of working in Central Asia provide an example of such challenges and a reason for her continued commitment to her work at the Institute, which seeks to, among other things, bring ‘Muslim scholarship to wider audiences.’
