Il Ngwesi Project
The Il Ngwesi Group Ranch is a Maasai-owned land situated in the breathtaking savannah north of Mount Kenya that is an international role model of community-based land and wildlife conservation.
On the land, they indulge friends and visitors to an award-winning community-run eco-lodge built from local materials. Scientists from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, East Africa, helped the community identify edible plants in their surroundings to diversify their diet. A world-renowned chef, who grew up in the region, helped lodge owners to refine their menu and include and present these new plants so that the gastronomic experience of the lodge was better attuned with its location.
These young Maasai chefs, waiters and managers now combine biodiversity with tasty food and gracious service emerging from their traditions.
