Faculty of Arts and Sciences, East Africa
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, East Africa (FAS EA) will follow the model of a four-year liberal arts college, and have two semesters per year of study. As a research university, it will also offer post-graduate degrees. Much research will be applied, including to policy. The FAS EA will be fully residential for both undergraduate and post-graduate students.
Profile of the Graduate
We will enable undergraduate students to discover themselves and aim at producing citizens who are:
- Problem-solvers and team-builders
- Creative and committed to excellence
- Ethical leaders who enable others and mediate differences
- Able to reflect on fundamental issues facing the human condition
- Equipped with basic life-skills
We will also mentor post-graduate students on research that is cutting-edge and applied to major challenges facing the region and the world.
We will select faculty not only for their excellence in their fields, but just as importantly, for their interest in exploring other fields of specialisation. Some may have a strong capacity for team-teaching or collaborative research, while others may enjoy community engagement. The university will provide incentives to balance research, creative activity and teaching with community service.
Our comparative advantage will lie in the thematic focus on vital issues, where knowledge is integrated and applied in the region.
Resilience: an integrated approach to enhancing adaptive capacity of landscapes, communities and institutions to shocks such as climate change and globalisation;
Human Development: the recent epigenetic revolution has demonstrated that early in life, the impact of attention, affection, stimulation and nutrition is far more decisive than previously assumed. This impact calls for an approach to understanding and enhancing human potential that integrates genetics, the social sciences, the arts and natural sciences.
Pluralism, is crucial in a region that has seen inter-ethnic violence and genocide. It must go beyond respecting diversity to understanding and honouring the many parts within, and connection among, individuals, communities, cultures and civilisations.
