Project Description  

"Evaluating the impact of new weather and climate services for fishers and farmers in the Lake Victoria region of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda"

To demonstrate the positive impact of improvements in weather and climate services for the millions of people in the Lake Victoria region of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda whose lives and livelihoods depend on agriculture and fishing.

Responsibilities  
  • Contribute to the design and testing of field survey tools  and protocols;
  • Administer a survey tool to assess weather and climate information needs of small scale farming and fishing communities;
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct individual and focused group interviews for farmers and fishers;
  • Record and manage field data in the appropriate database; and
  • Contribute to report writing and data analysis.
Eligibility  
  • Enrolment in an Undergraduate or a Graduate programme in either of the following or related fields: Statistics, Biology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences or Environmental / Ecology, Environmental and Resource Studies, Geology and Hydrogeology etc;  
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills;
  • Ability to manage and plan field surveys, design sturvey tools and conduct individual and focused group interviews;
  • Capacity to use and learn new software such as GIS, remote sensing and statistical software;
  • Familiarity with Excel and Access programmes; and
  • Knowledge and understanding of challenges of climate change in agriculture and fisheries will be an asset.
Expected Project Outcome  
  • A reduction in the social impediments to sound life and livelihood decisions;
  • A measurable increase in food security of individuals and communities because of their capacity to make better and more timely decisions;
  • Identification of food insecure regions so that national and international agencies can make effective interventions to safeguard nutrition; and
  • Providing fishers and farmers with reliable information about  weather related risks to help them make the appropriate decisions that reduce the number of lives lost due to weather relaced accidents over Lake Victoria.

 

Benefits  

​The selected intern will be provided with furnished accommodations and a monthly stipend to cover food and transportation expenses. All visa processing costs will also be covered.
