​The position serves as a highly visible, energetic champion of quality and patient safety for the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).   The incumbent, reporting to the Regional CEO Health Services, is expected to provide leadership for planning, organizing, leading and controlling the hospital wide quality and patient safety programs.   Will lead the organization to achieve outstanding performance on key national and international standardized metrics of quality and patient safety.   Collaborates with the Medical Director’s Office for  risk and regulatory affairs to play a key role in developing a comprehensive program through the implementation of systems that create a culture of safety; proactively identify risk; encourage adverse event reporting and thoughtful, learning-oriented analysis of safety events; facilitate system-wide learning on the part of leaders, clinicians, trainees, and staff; and facilitate system and individual improvements required for the safest possible health care.  The position serves as key liaison to all healthcare sites and services i.e., nursing, clinical, medical, administrative departments and committees.  The Director works with all constituencies to understand their needs and devise solutions to ensure that AKUH reaches its goal of becoming a patient centered institution in the future.

The incumbent will be responsible to:​

  • Lead the development, implementation, assessment and continuous improvement of comprehensive, state-of-art quality improvement and patient safety programs.  Develops and implements strategic plans to maximize and document improvements in the quality, safety and value of patient care services.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of processes to identify and prioritize quality improvement opportunities. Supports and where necessary oversees redesign of patient care services by multi-disciplinary teams that aim to improve quality, safety and/or service.  Identifies and develops appropriate process and outcome measures in support of the quality improvement plan. Actively communicates quality improvement activities and knowledge throughout AKUH.
  • Provides overall guidance necessary to ensure that clinical services are provided in accordance with established standards including evidence-based practices.
  • Regulatory, Accreditation and Licensure activity:  Collaborates with all the relevant departments to ensure that AKUH meets all legal and regulatory requirements relevant to quality and patient safety and promotes ethical and legal practices.  Meets all obligations and deadlines.
  • Keeps abreast of current industry trends within field/scope of responsibility.  Uses process improvement methodologies to ensure department activities support the organization's quality goals.
  • Quality monitoring and ongoing evaluations through internal and external audits, quality measures, medical audits, etc.  
  • Maintaining and improving compliance to international accreditation standards based on Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA), ISO 9001-2008, ISO 22000 and Prime Minister Quality Award(PMQA)  as well as other future initiatives like CAP(full form) Accreditation.  
  • Communicating and coordinating with all external quality certification and accreditation agencies on matters of hospital’s external certifications and accreditations. 
  • Acting as the system wide Quality Audit Authority with planning, organizing and leading all quality audit activities for the entire healthcare system.
  • Establishing a new Quality and Patient Safety Department at AKUH with planning and organizing its staffing and other resource needs.
  • Synchronization of different components of quality improvement and patient safety program.
  • Delegates appropriately and provides adequate direction and follow-up to achieve outcomes. Consistently contributes ideas and suggestions to improve approaches, methodologies and productivity.  Adapts to new situations and learns new skills in response to workplace changes.
  • ​Master’s or doctorate in business, nursing, health administration, management or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive administrative leadership experience in quality improvement and patient safety activities in a large, integrated, tertiary health care setting providing expert level of understanding of the art and the science of quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Demonstrated ability in design and implementation of performance improvement activities in a health care setting including skillful application of continuous quality improvement and patient safety sciences.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new vision creates a strategic plan, and lead change.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in healthcare quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Demonstrates leadership and commitment to staff and colleagues by accepting accountability for outcomes, sharing timely information, building effective relationships and communicating clearly and directly. Understands and supports the value of a diverse workforce. 
  • Expresses thoughts and ideas in a clear, succinct and compelling manner. Adjusts style to capture audience attention. Uses appropriate interpersonal style and communication methods to influence and build effective relationships with business partners and to develop, motivate and guide teams toward successful outcomes in support of organizational objectives.
  • Ability to inspire trust, builds high-performing teams, and motivates them to work well together.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and statistical process control tools to produce significant improvements in the quality and safety of care. Builds effective relationships across work groups by treating fellow employees with courtesy, respect and inclusiveness; maintains a positive attitude and takes responsibility for assignments.
