5th INTER SCHOOL/COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL AND THROWBALL TOURNAMENT 2007

The Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports & Rehabilitation Centre organized its 5th under 19 Inter School/Collegiate Basketball (for boys) and Throwball (for girls) Tournaments in the first week of February, 2007 at the AKU Sports Centre Gymnasium.

Inauguration- Basketball Tournament

Eight Teams representing reputable Educational Institutions across Karachi took part in the Basketball Tournament. The teams were divided into 2 pools and the round matches were played on league basis. Pool 'A' comprised of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Bay View High School, Meritorious Science College and Shahwilayat Public School. Pool 'B' comprised of The Lyceum School, The City School (Darakhshan Campus), Habib Boys School and Fatimiyah College.The inaugural of the Basketball Tournament was held on Saturday, February 3, 2007. Mr. Murad Veerjee, Manager Staff Recruitment, AKU inaugurated the Tournament along with Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chief Organizer and Manager AKU Sports Centre and Yaqoob Qadry FIBA referee. The Teams were present in their colorful sports uniform at the elegant opening ceremony. On the opening day 4 matches were played. The inaugural match was played between the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School against Bay View High School which was won by Bay View High School by 62-41 points.  The Tournament progressed through Semi-Finals and Final stages. The result of the inaugural match was as follows:

AGA KHAN HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL Vs BAY VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

BAY VIEW HIGH SCHOOL won the match, Score 62 ,  41_ Points.

At half time, Score was 33 , 17 Points in favour of BAY VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

Individual Score Winner

1. Zain Tariq  32 Pts. 2. Qasim  09 Pts. 3. Ahad Aftab  08 Pts. while

1. Ahmed Jamal  21 Pts.. 2.M. Haroon  09 Pts.  were the main scorers for looser.

Inauguration- Throwball Tournament

Twelve Teams representing reputable Educational Institutions across Karachi took part in the Throwball Tournament. The teams were divided into 4 pools. Pool 'A' comprised of Mohammadi Girls Secondary School, Karachi Public School (Star Gate Branch) and Habib Girls School. Pool 'B' comprised of Convent of Jesus & Mary, The Lyceum School 'B' Team and Aga Khan Higher Secondary School. Pool 'C' comprised of St. Patrick's High School, The City School (Darakshan Campus) and St. Joseph's Convent School and Pool 'D' comprised of  The Lyceum School 'A' Team, Bay View High School and Meritorious Science College.The Throwball Tournament was inaugurated on Sunday, February 4, 2007. Dr. Gulzar S. Lakhani, Manager Department of Surgery, AKU along with Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chief Organizer and Manager AKU Sports Centre inaugurated the Tournament. A colourful opening ceremony was held.  The teams were present in their smart sports kits. The Captains of the participating teams took the Oath and later the teams were introduced to the Chief Guest. The Tournaments round, quarters and semi-finals matches were played by Best of Three and the Final, Best of Five Games. The inaugural match was played between the winners of last year Mohammadi Girls Secondary School against Karachi Public School which was easily won by Mohammadi Girls Secondary School by 2-nil games.  The results were as follows:

MOHAMMADI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL Vs KARACHI PUBLIC SCHOOL

MOHAMMADI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL won the match by __2__ Games.

Score was: 1st Game:_15, 01 Points, 2nd Game: :15, Nil Points.

A good performance was shown by_ATIFA DARAB and GULSHAD GULUMARJAN of the winning team While SAMIA CHOUDHRY performed well on behalf of the losers.

Semi-Finals

The Semi-Finals of the Throwball and Basketball Tournaments were played on Thursday, February 8, 2007.  Results of Throwball & Basketball Semi-finals were:

THROWBALL -  1ST SEMI-FINAL

MOHAMMADI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL VS. HABIB GIRLS SCHOOL

MOHAMMADI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL won match by _2 - 1_ Games.

Score was: 1st Game:15 - 07 Points, 2nd Game: 11 - 15 Points in favour of Habib Girls School. 3rd Game:15 - 02  Points. A good performance was shown by ATIFA DARABALI  AND YASMIN MIR  of the winning team while SALMA ZAIDI  performed well on behalf of the losers

THROWBALL 2ND SEMI-FINAL

CONVENT OF JESUS & MARY     VS.      THE LYCEUM SCHOOL 'B' TEAM

CONVENT OF JESUS & MARY  won the match by _2 - 1_ Games after a thrilling, exciting and tough encounter. Score was 1st Game: 11 - 15  Points in favour of The Lyceum School, 2nd Game:  15 - 07 Points and 3rd Game:  _15  -  12 Points

A good performance was shown by HIRA NOOR  and MARIUM BILLWAHI of the winning team while AZMEH AMIR performed well on behalf of the losers.

BASKETBALL 1ST SEMI-FINAL

THE CITY SCHOOL (DARAKSHAN CAMPUS)             VS.      BAY VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

THE CITY SCHOOL (DARAKSHAN CAMPUS)  won the match, Score  39  - 27  Points

.At half time, Score was  28  - 16  Points in favour of THE CITY SCHOOL (DARAKSHAN CAMPUS)

THE LYCEUM  SCHOOL Vs SHAHWILLYAT PUBLIC  SCHOOL

THE LYCEUM  SCHOOL won the match, score   65  -  26  Points.

At half time, Score was  21  -  17  Points in favour of THE LYCEUM  SCHOOL.

FINAL

CONVENT OF JESUS & MARY & THE CITY SCHOOL DK CAMPUS 'A' WON AKU TITLES

The AKU Sports & Rehabilitation Centre's 5th Inter School/Collegiate Basketball and Throwball events were completed at AKU Sports Centre Gymnasium on Saturday evening, February 10, 2007.  THE CITY SCHOOL (Darakshan Campus 'A') clinched the Basketball Title beating THE LYCEUM SCHOOL by 52 - 45 score in the Final.  At the end of the half, the Score was 22 24 points in favour of THE LYCEUM SCHOOL. The main scorers for the winners were Raja Jehanzeb 26 Pts.  Shahmeel Hyder 12 Pts. and Maaz Sultan 07 Pts while for the Losers, their Main scorers were Ikramullah 19 Pts. and Zohair Mazhar 16 Pts.

The Throwball Final was won by CONVENT OF JESUS & MARY (CJM) after a thrilling, exciting and nail biting finish by beating MOHAMMADI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL (MGSS) by  3 - 1 games.  The Scores were: 02 - 15 Pts. in favour of MGSS. 15 - 13, 15 - 03  and  15 - 04 points respectively in favour of CJM.  A good performance was shown by Maida Zia and Shadab Gul of the Winning Team while Atifa Darab performed well on behalf of the Losers.

Dr. Saida Rasul, First Lady, AKU, Ms. Shams Jeewa, Chairperson Aga Khan Youth & Sports Board for Pakistan and Pakistan Test Cricketer Danish Kaneria graced the occasion and presented the Throwball Winning Trophy to Meshal Imtiaz, Captain of CJM and Runner-up's Trophy to Gulshad Gulmarjan Captain MGSS.  Maida Zia of CJM was awarded the Best Player of the Throwball Tournament while a special Consolation Prize was awarded to Atifa Darab of the MGSS for consistently performing well in the Tournament. The City School (Dk Campus 'A') Captain Shameel Hyder received the Basketball Winning Trophy while Ikramullah, Skipper The Lyceum School received the Runner's Trophy. Raja Jahanzeb of The City School (DK Campus) was awarded Best Player of the Basketball Tournament, the Highest Scorer of the Tournament Award was given to Ikramullah of The Lyceum School and a special consolation prizes was also given to Zain Tariq of Bay View High School.

The Chief Guest Ms. Shams Jeewa and Guest of Honour Danish Kaneria congratulated the winning teams and appreciated each individual player for their sportsmanship. They appreciated the efforts of AKU Sports Centre' Management and Tournament Organizers for organizing such healthy activities especially for the youths.  Mr. Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chairman Organizing Committee and Manager AKU Sports Centre thanked the Guests, the Heads of the participating Institutions and the technical officials for all the support in organizing the successful tournaments.
