5th CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2005

AKU STAFF 'A' TEAM WINS THE CRICKET TITLE

AKU Staff 'A' Team annexed the 5th Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports & Rehabilitation Centre Cricket Tournament after beating United Bank Ltd (UBL) by 8 Wickets in the final at AKU Sports Centre Ground on Sunday January 29, 2006. The highlights of the final were the glorious knock by AKU Batsmen Mir Afzal Baig-73 (4x9/6x1) of Dept. of HIMS Shahid Hussain-50 (4x2/6x1) of Dept. of HIMS and Vice Captain Adnan Jafri-38 N.O. (4x1/6x5) of Dept. of Marketing and Khawaja Asif-69 (4x6/6x2) of UBL. Tidy Bowling was seen by Sharaze of Clinical Lab-AKU (3-32).

UBL won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 181 for loss of 7 wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. Khawaja Asif-69 (4x6/6x2), Tariq Iqbal-24 (4x1/6x2), Faisal Waqar-20 (4x1/6x2) were the main run getters. In return AKU's batmen Mir Afzal Baig-73(4x9/6x1), Shahid Hussain-50 (4x2/6x1) and Adnan Jafri-38 N.O.(4x1/6x5) took their team to victory by making 183 for 2 wickets in 21 overs. Sharaze of AKU (3x32) bowled well for their side to victory. The Chief Guest Mr. Hanif Shariff, Sr. Manager AKU Administrative Services and Riaz Akbar Contractor Chief Organizer and Manager AKU Sports Centre distributed the prizes amongst the players. The Winning Trophy was received by Adnan Jafri (AKU), Runner's Up Trophy by Asif Khawaja (UBL), Best Batsmen Award was given Kamran Saeed of PPTA (427 runs), Best Bowler Award was awarded to Karim Khan (Jr.) of AKU Staff 'B' Team (17 wickets/186 runs), Player of the Tournament Award was given to Asif Siddiqui of UBL (417 & 10/138 runs) and Man of the Final match was given to Mir Afzal Baig of AKU 'A' Team (73 runs in 50 balls) All team players were given individual prizes. Prizes were also distributed to the officials. The match was supervised by Umpire Mohd. Rehan and Zafer Ahmed, scoring by Taha Khan.

It may be noted that the Tournament commenced from Sunday, May 22, 2005. In all, sixteen Organization Cricket Teams of repute took part in the tournament. The teams were divided in two pools:

Pool A: Reckitt Benckiser Pakistan Ltd., ABN AMRO Bank, KASB Bank Ltd., Roche Pakistan Ltd., Cougars - Apparel Net, U-Fone, Glaxo Smith Kline and AKU Staff 'A' Team.

Pool B: Meezan Bank Ltd., United Bank Ltd, Central Depository Co. of Pakistan Ltd. (CDC), Maersk Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd., Pakistan PTA Ltd., Engro Joint Ventures, Seimens Pakistan and AKU Staff 'B' Team. The tournament was played on league basis and the matches were played during weekends (Saturday and Sunday) at the AKU Sports Ground.
