INTER-UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2006

AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY LIFTS 5th AKU INTER-UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL TROPHY

The Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports Centre organized its 5th Inter-University Basketball Tournament 2006 in April/May 2006. Five Teams from reputable Institutions: Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU), Jinnah Medical & Dental College (JMDC), Baqai Medical University (BMU), Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) and Aga Khan University (AKU) took part in the Tournament. The Tournament was played on league basis at the AKU Sports Centre Gymnasium.

The inaugural of the Basketball Tournament was held on Saturday, April 29, 2006. Riaz Akbar Contractor, Manager Sports & Rehabilitation Centre, AKU officially inaugurated the Tournament along with Dr. Sohail Qureshi, Chair Sports Centre Advisory Committee. The Teams and the officials were introduced to the Chief Guest who later tossed the ball and officially inaugurated the Tournament. The inaugural match was played between Baqai Medical University (BMU) and Aga Khan University (AKU) which was won by AKU by 81 /_40_ points.

FINAL

The Aga Khan University (AKU) and Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) qualified to play the Final of the 5th AKU Inter-University Basketball Tournament. The Final was played on Friday, May 5, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. at the Sports Centre Gymnasium. Dr. Gregory Papppas, Professor and Chairman, Department of Community Health Sciences, AKU and Mr. S.M. Tanveeer, Former International Player (1974-85) and Captain, Pakistan Basketball Team (1979-80) and Manager Habib Bank Basketball Team was the Guest of Honours  on the occasion.

AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY beat SIR SYED UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY in the Final and lifted the 5th AKU Inter-University Basketball 2006 Trophy.

AKU_ won the match, score 72, 62 Points.

In the 1st Quarter, the Score was 19/15 points in favour of AKU.  In the 2nd Quarter the Score was 35/24 points. In the 3rd Quarter the Score was 56/46 points and in the last 4th quarter the Score was 72/62 points in favour of AKU respectively.

Individual Score Winner

1. OVAIS HASAN-Captain  (21) Pts with 2 three pointers. 2. NOMAN FAZAL (17) Pts. with 2 three pointers.3. OMER MOIN (16) Pts. 4. AFFAN UMER (9) Pts. 5. BILAL ABID (8) Pts.

While 1. SAJJAD MUGHAL (19) Pts. 2. RAKAY SHAMSI - Captain (15) Pts.  3. BILAL AHMED (14) Pts. were the main scorers for looser.

The Chief Guest Dr. Gregory Pappas and Guest of Honour Mr.  S. M. Tanveer, presented the Winning Trophy to Ovais Hasan, Captain of AKU, Runner's-Up Trophy to Rakay Shamsi, Captain of SSUET, Best Scorer of the Tournament Award to Fahad Ahmed of DUHS and Best Player of the Tournament Award to Ovais Hasan of AKU besides individual prizes to all the finalists team members.  A special consolation prize was presented to Rakay Shamsi of SSUET for demonstrating excellent skills in the Tournament. Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chief Organizer and Manager AKU Sports Centre presented souvenirs to the Tournament Technical Officials.  Riaz Contractor thanked the University teams for their participation and successful organization of the tournament.  Dr. Gregory Pappas and S.M. Tanveer congratulated the Winning and the Runner-up teams for an exciting team display and praised the Organizing Committee for an excellent Tournament and the promotion of the Basketball.
