LIFTS THE 4TH AKU INTER UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
TROPHY
The Aga Khan
University (AKU) Sports Centre organized its 4th AKU
Inter University Football Tournament which commenced from Thursday,
June 15, 2006 at the AKU Football Ground. Five University/Colleges
of Karachi: Jinnah Medical & Dental College (JMDC), Ziauddin
University (ZU), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Pakistan
Air Force-Karachi Institute of Engineering & Technology (PAF-KIET)
and the Aga Khan University Medical College (AKUMC) took part.
The tournament was played on single league basis (each team playing
against each other). The top two teams played the final.

INAUGURATION:

Tariq Lutfi, Sr. National Coach, Pakistan Football Team in presence
of Riaz Ahmed, Coordinator, Sports & Culture, City District
Government, Karachi and Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chief Organizer
and Manager AKU Sports Centre and other distinguished guests,
inaugurated the Football Tournament. The opening match was played
between Ziauddin University (ZU) and Aga Khan University Medical
College (AKUMC) which was won by AKUMC after an exciting and thrilling
encounter by 2-Nil games. The first goal was scored by M. Kaleem
for AKUMC in the 12th minute of the first half. ZU
tried to equalize the goal but could not succeed. At the 54th
minute, Ali Ahmed of AKUMC managed to score the 2nd
goal to add on AKUMC success.
Mr. Tariq
Lutfi in his speech greatly appreciated the efforts of the organizers
specially Riaz Akbar Contractor for organizing healthy and competitive
sports events in the education sector for promoting the football
at the grass root level in schools, colleges and universities
for the development of the youth. Addressing the students specially,
he mentioned that with hard work and dedication and passion for
football, Pakistan Team may have players from the University students
in future. Earlier Riaz Akbar Contractor, Manager AKU Sports Centre
and Chairman Tournament Organizing Committee welcomed the distinguished
guests and briefed about the tournament and thanked all the participating
Institutions.
FINAL
The Final of the Tournament was played on Thursday,
June 22, 2006. Aga Khan University Medical College (AKUMC) annexed
the title of the 4th AKU Inter-University Football
Tournament and lifted the trophy by beating Dow University of
Health Sciences (DHUS) in the final by 2-Nil Goals. Both teams
gave a thrilling contest to each other and played an attacking
game since the start of the whistle. M. Kaleem of AKUMC made
the first break for his team when he scored the first goal in
the 5th minute of the game. There after DUHS team
put up extra efforts to equalize the goal. Rafy Sufi of AKUMC
scored the second goal in the 37th minute giving his
team the lead of 2 goals. DUHS tried its best to equalize the
goals but AKUMC took a defensive position and maintained their
lead till the end of the match. AKUMC won the game by 2 nil goals. AKUMC remained the winner throughout the Tournament and no goal
was scored against them and they remained unbeaten. The final
match was supervised by Referee Abdul Rasool, Asst. Referees Aziz
Pasha, Abdul Majeed & Forth Official Ameer Hatim and Match
Commissioner S. M. Zafar Imam.

The Chief Guest, Pride of Performance and former
Captain Pakistan Football Team (1974.) Ali Nawaz Baloch, congratulated
the Winning and Runner-up teams and said that he was happy to
note that the University students indulge in healthy sports activities.
He appreciated the efforts of organizers specially Riaz Akbar
Contractor, Chairman, Tournament Organizing Committee and Manager
AKU Sports Centre for organizing excellent events for the students
and emphasized that more and more such events should be organized.
He emphasized that such tournaments should be organized between
schools and colleges to identify the players of football from
the grass root level. Earlier welcoming the distinguished guests,
Riaz A. Contractor briefed about tournament and thanked all participating
teams. Ali Nawaz Baloch presented the Wining Trophy to AKUMC
Captain Syed Ahad Ali, Runner-Up Trophy to DUHS Skipper Haris
Laghari, Player of the Tournament Award to Miram Afridi, Goal
Keeper of AKUMC. Individual gifts to the finalists and the officials
were also presented by the Chief Guest.
