5th AKU ALL KARACHI MEDICAL COLLEGE CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2006

AKUMC LIFTS THE MEDICAL COLLEGE CRICKET TOURNAMENT TROPHY

The Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports Centre organized its 5th AKU All Karachi Medical College Cricket Tournament which commenced from Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Centre Sports Ground.  Five out of the eight Medical Colleges of Karachi: Jinnah Medical & Dental College (JMDC), Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU), Karachi Medical & Dental College ((KMDC), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and the Aga Khan University Medical College (AKUMC) participated. The tournament was played on league basis and two teams after topping the list in their league matches played the final.

Inauguration:

Professor Wasim Jafri, Chairman, Department of Medicine, Aga Khan University (AKU) and Test Cricketer Faisal Iqbal inaugurated the Cricket Tournament. The opening match was played between Karachi Medical & Dental College (KMDC) and Aga Khan University Medical College (AKUMC) which was won by AKUMC by 5 wickets.

Summarized Scores:

After winning the toss, KMDC elected to bat first.  KMDC were bowled out for 160 runs in 24.4 overs. Imran Ansari 47 (7x4), Haseeb Zubair 32 (4x4), Raffat Shakeel 23 and Mohd. Raheel 21 played well from the losing side. Brilliant bowling was seen by AKUMC Students: Shuja-u-Rehman (3/26), Rashid Badar (2/25) and Yasir Jamal (2/21). In return AKUMC chased the target in 18.2overs (164/05) and won the inaugural match by 5 wickets.  Rashid Badar 69 (5x6, 5x4), Nadeem Aqeel 51 (7x4) Sajjad Ahmed 21*N.O (1x6, 3x4) batted well to take the AKUMC for victory.  Riffat Shakeel (2/47) and Sardar Khan (2/47) were the wicket takers from KMDC.

Final

The Final of the Tournament was played on Sunday, May 28, 2006 between Aga Khan University Medical College (AKUMC)  and Dow University of Helath Sciences (DUHS). AKUMC annex the title of the 5th AKU All Karachi Medical College Tournament beating (DUHS) in the final by 05 wickets at AKU Sports Centre ground.  Tayyab Muhammad of AKUMC was awarded Man of the Final Match who scored 50 runs and 5/23 wickets.  Dr. Mohammad Khurshid, Dean, Medical College, Aga Khan University and Jalauddin, Former Test Cricketer distributed the prizes among the students.

After winning the toss, AKUMC elected to field first.  DUHS made 146/09 runs in the designated 25 overs. Harris Laghari 53 (4x4, 2x6) and Faisal Khawja 28 (3x4, 2x6) played well from the losing side. Brilliant bowling were seen by AKUMC Students: Tayyab Mohd. (5/23), Rashid Badar (2/26). In return AKUMC chased the target in 19.5 overs (147/05) and won the Final by 5 wickets.  Tayyab Mohd 50* Retired Hurt (6x4, 1x6), Nadeem Aqeel* Retired Hurt 37 (4x4, 1x6) and Rashid Badar 25 (4x4, 1x6) batted well to take the AKUMC for victory.  Rao Mehtab (2/05) and Haris Laghari (2/24) were the wicket takers from DUHS.

The Guest of Honours Dr. Mohammad Khurshid and Jalauddin in their speech congratulated the Winning and Runner-up teams and emphasized that medical student with their stressful and hectic studies should take out time for physical activities and indulge in healthy sports which are a main source of the stress reliever. They appreciated the efforts of organizers specially Riaz Akbar Contractor, Chairman, Tournament Organizing Committee and Manager AKU Sports Centre for organizing excellent events for the medical students and emphasized that such tournaments should be carried out on a regular basis. Earlier welcoming the distinguished guests, Riaz Akbar Contractor briefed about tournament and thanked all participating teams.  Dr. Mohammad Khurshid presented the Wining Trophy to AKUMC Captain Rashid Badar, Runner-Up Trophy to DUHS skipper Faisal Khawaja. AKUMC students bagged all the three major awards of the Tournament. Player of the Tournament - Tayyab Mohd., Best Batsman - Rashid Badar and Best Bowler Shuja-ur-Rehman.
