Staff Team won the Aga Khan University (AKU) Sports & Rehabilitation
Centre Cricket Tournament 2004 after beating ABN AMRO Bank by 48
runs in the final at AKU Sports Centre Ground on Sunday, 26 September
2004. The highlights of the final were the exciting scoring by Mir
Afzal Baig (87) Shahid Hussain (47), Zahid Raza (34), Salman Butt
(25) Tidy bowling by Adnan Siddiqui (4-37), Moiz Wali (3-26), Adnan
Jafri (3-28) and smart piece of wicket keeping by Clifford Lucase
(2 St, 1 Ct) respectively. AKU Staff Team scored 190 for loss of
8 wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. Opener Mir Afzal Baig and
Shahid Hussain shared 127 runs in 2nd wicket partnership. Mir Afzal
Baig scored 87 while Shahid Hussain contributed 37 runs. Adnan Siddiqui
and Moiz Wali bold with length and direction and captured 4 and
3 wickets costing 37 and 26 runs respectively. In their turn ABN
AMRO Bank was bold out for 142 runs in 22.5 overs. Zahid Raza 34,
Shiraz Khan 27, Salman Butt 25, Humair Shaffat 19 n.o. were the
main run getter. Adnan Jafri 3-28, Aslam Jindani 2-16 and Rahim
Suleman 2-18 bold for their side to victory. The chief guest Nadeem
Mustafa Khan, Director General & C.E.O. AKUH and Guest of Honour
Mr. Sikander Bakht, Former Test Cricketer distributed the prizes
amongst the players. The Winning Trophy was received by Aslam Jindani,
Runner's Up Trophy by Moiz Wali. All the major awards were bagged
by AKU Staff Team. Best Batsmen by Shahid Hussain of HIMS (230 runs
in 4 innings), Best Bowler by Moiz Abdul of Purchase Dept. (12 wickets/108
runs), Player of the Tournament Adnan Jafri of Marketing Dept. (270
& 10 wickets/109 runs) and Man of the Final match by Mir Afzal Baig
of HIMS. All team players were given individual prizes.
Nadeem
Mustafa Khan in his address appreciated the efforts of the Sports
Centre for the successful completion of the tournament and hoped
that the tradition would be kept on in the following years. Sikander
Bakht praised AKU for having such a beautiful ground and was impressed
by seeing excellent facilities for members and users of the Sports
Centre. Sikander Bakht especially thanked Riaz Akbar Contractor
and his colleagues for inviting him in such a prestigious and colourful
ceremony. Earlier Riaz Akbar Contractor described the main features
of the tournament. He mentioned that 12 teams of repute of Karachi
(including AKU Staff Team) participated and hoped that the organizations
will also cooperate in future programmes too. Riaz Contractor in
his welcome speech thanked Nadeem Mustafa Khan, Sikander Bakht and
other distinguished guests who spared their valuable time to attend
the function.
