The Health Information Management Services at AKUH offers comprehensive services for medical record-keeping, maintenance and dissemination of patients' clinical information. It codes diagnoses and procedures of inpatient discharges using ICD-9-CM, a WHO recommended classification system. The data captured is used for research, education and administrative planning. The service offers transcribing facilities for operation notes and executive clinic reports.

The Department receives and responds to numerous requests for information about the health records in its custody. All AKUH clinical information is considered highly confidential. The Department releases information by issuing copies of medical tests, for which an AKUH ID card (white plastic card) or the payment receipt is required.
