The Department of Community Health Sciences’ Master of Science (MSc) in Epidemiology & Biostatistics Programme is pleased to announce Nutrition Epidemiology as a standalone course scheduled from July – September 2014. This course is a part of the MSc Epidemiology & Biostatistics’ curriculum but can also be taken without enrolling in a degree programme.
ABOUT THE COURSE
Nutrition Epidemiology (2 credits)
Course Director: Dr Romaina Iqbal
This course is intended for participants seeking to understand the various parameters used in the assessment of a community’s nutritional status. The benefits and pitfalls of key nutrition assessment tools will be discussed in this course. Conventional versus latest techniques for assessment of nutritional status at population level will also be discussed.
The course will cover a vast variety of topics in nutrition epidemiology and public health nutrition and utilize the expertise of various faculty members in teaching this course. Development and use of anthropometric, biochemical, dietary data collection and assessment techniques and their pitfalls will be covered. Also development and validation of physical activity questionnaires for use in local settings will be discussed.
One class per week; 2 hours on Monday, from July 7 – September 26, 2014
Candidates for enrolment in this course must present one of the following:
- An MBBS degree; or
- A master’s degree (in science including social science disciplines); or
- Four-year bachelors undergraduate degree or equivalent e.g. BScN, BDS, DVM, etc.
The course does not have prerequisite coursework, however it is intended for individuals who have had minimum 1 year past work experience in health-related field and/or social sectors.
