The Aga Khan University has established a Department of Oncology bringing together surgical, medical and radiation disciplines to focus on cancer care. “Cancer patients coming to Aga Khan University Hospital will now be provided all services including specialised radiation, concentrated medical advice and after care under one roof with all concerned doctors having their clinics in the Ibn-e-Zuhr Building” said Dr Mohammad Khurshid, Founding Chair of the new department.
Research in liaison with the Clinical Trails Unit at AKU will be conducted both at community level and basic level that will eventually lead to preventive practices in cancer.
New programmes like clinical haematology are being introduced at the department and specialised curriculum will be developed to train future oncologists, nursing staff, radiotherapists and allied help professionals for oncology.
Dr Mohammad Khurshid is an experienced haematologist and a senior professor who joined AKU in 1985 as Founding Chair, Department of Pathology. He has served as Medical Director and Associate Dean Clinical Affairs and was also the Dean of the Medical College. He received the Pride of Performance award in 2003.
