ABSTRACT

Truck decoration is an ubiquitous practice across Pakistan, to the point that it has been treated by urban elites as the most distinguishing aspect of so-called “folk” culture in Pakistan.  At the same time, given the pervasiveness of trucks and the regularity with which they need to be re-decorated, truck decoration comprises the largest art-related economy in the country.  This talk attempts to go beyond the treatment of truck decoration as a disembodied form of design and to see the attitudes and practices associated with it as situated within a broader context in which notions of identity, religion, modernity, nationhood, politics, class, gender and culture play central roles.
