Torture often requires the complicity of health professionals using a number of arguments to justify their participation. These arguments are based on there being things worse than torture, which the use of torture can prevent. Dr. Mathews will examine the foundations of these claims.
Dr. Richard Matthews is an author, award-winning lecturer, and ethicist working on domestic and political violence. He is a professor and lecturer in moral philosophy and applied ethics. Presently, he is teaching bioethics at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Matthews has published numerous articles and a book on the nature and ethics of torture.
