Aga Khan University Hospital commissioned its 200th laboratory specimen collection unit on December 10, 2012. The opening of the collection unit is part of ongoing efforts by the Hospital to provide quality testing services throughout the country which has already seen the opening of a stat lab in Rawalpindi in September and the setting up of Pakistan’s first fully automated biochemistry laboratory in February this year.
Speaking at the inauguration, Nadeem Mustafa Khan, Regional CEO, Health Services, Asia (AKUH, Pakistan and FMIC, Afghanistan) lauded the clinical laboratories team for its efforts in providing quality testing services to a large number of the general population. “Our aim is to reach out and be accessible to all the citizens of this country so that they can obtain first class care,” said Khan.
He was alluding to the expanding network of the Clinical Laboratories with a current presence in 88 cities across Pakistan, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Dharki, Mirpur Mathelo, Jacobabad, Multan, Rahimyar Khan, Vehari, Leiha, Lahore, Faisalabad, Nankana Sahib, Hafizabad, Islamabad, Ralwalpindi, Dina, Kharian, Peshawar, Abottabad, Saidu Sharif, Timargarh, Quetta, Loralai and Turbat. True to its mission of providing access, 40 lab collection units provide welfare support to people in need.
The Clinical Laboratories of the Hospital is a national reference lab and offers a 700-test menu in the areas of haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, histopathology, molecular pathology, blood bank and transfusion services. It is well equipped, highly automated, fully computerized and overseen by highly qualified faculty. The three-tier lab system comprises a tertiary lab in Karachi, 12 outreach laboratories in 8 cities across Pakistan and 200 laboratory specimen collection units.
A strict internal quality assurance programme maintains the accuracy and precision of laboratory tests at AKUH. As a further control, the laboratory also participates in the external quality assurance programme of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
