Welcome to Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKU-SON). Established in 1980, AKU-SON has prepared leaders in nursing practice, education and administration. The School strives to train nurses to deliver high quality care in both hospital and community settings. Since its establishment, AKU-SON has come to be recognized as a trend-setter for nursing education in Pakistan. The School has created the transition from diploma to degree programmes in the country. The most recent development is the beginning of the first graduate nursing programme (MScN) in October, 2001.

A diverse student body, which comprises students from urban, rural and mountainous areas throughout the region, has challenged faculty to provide a broad-based education for the professional and personal development of our students.  In keeping with the University's values, the School is dedicated to assisting the students in developing skills in problem solving and critical thinking, and in designing innovative interventions in response to the present and emerging needs of Pakistan. 

I personally feel that one of our major accomplishments has been faculty development. In 1980, none of the faculty at AKU-SON had a degree in nursing except the Canadian Director. Today the faculty is prepared at BScN, MScN and doctoral levels. These academic goals would not have been possible without the commitment of the Chancellor and the founder of AKU, His Highness, the Aga Khan towards women's development and enhancement of the nursing profession in the developing world.

Collaboration with universities such as McMaster in Canada and Sheffield in the UK facilitate excellence in all of our programmes.  We are confident that our programmes meet international standards.
