Introduction
The one year internship programme at Aga Khan University is recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. All universities in USA and UK also recognise Aga Khan University's internship programme after internal verification.
Philosophy of internship
Internship is a period of transition from being a medical student to becoming a high caliber medical professional who is directly responsible for patient care. This transition has to be gradual and progressive, and is assisted through supervision from senior medical colleagues. The internship is also a period of intense and close interaction with patients and their families, other doctors and members of the clinical team and the larger health care community. It is anticipated that AKU interns will learn from and integrate these influences to allow him or her to develop into a reliable and responsible professional, suitable for further training in the discipline of his or her choice.
Why should you do an internship at Aga Khan University?
The internship programme at AKU is recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC). All universities in USA and UK also recognise our internship programme after internal verification. We firmly believe that internship is an educational programme. Our aim is to provide quality exposure to each intern in the fields of medicine and surgery. They should become a functional member of their teams which form the basic working and learning unit. They have open access to all academic programmes of their teams, department and the University. All interns are provided a free email account, computers, free access to library, internet and audiovisual facilities. Our intern graduates feel confident to work in any postgraduate programme of the country or abroad. Many of them choose AKU for their specialisation. They also have an advantage in getting selected into postgraduate programmes at AKU. This is because of the professional standards that they achieve while working with the faculty and systems of AKU.
