Educational Resources

In addition to the general physical and systemic resources for post-graduate medical education described above, the University has facilities for enhancing one's education, expanding one's horizon and obtaining access to international resources exist in the University, some of which are unique in Pakistan.

The Faculty of Health Sciences Library is the best medical library in the country. Its collection and the nearly 500 journals it subscribes to are available to the residents.

The Audio-visual Library and Learning Resource Centre provide various educational materials in digital format and can be used for individual or group study. Their staff helps with the production of presentations and posters for academic purposes.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has arranged free full-text access to thousands of international academic journals. This Digital Library can be accessed through the University's computers. The PGME EC has provided computers in the wards dedicated to the use of residents even while they are working. These can be used to access the Library of Images which contains digital images of clinical and educational relevance.

PGME Website

This provides access to information about all post-graduate education related matters including information about programmes, PGME activities, other University activities as well as educational resources such as journal sites and PGME Core Lectures. It also has a discussion board to provide a forum to air and discuss issues related to postgraduate medical education - training, administration, review, clinical etc.

Every resident is given a unique e-mail address and provided with free email service. Plans are afoot to provide free internet access to the post-graduate medical students as well.

PGME Conference

Aga Khan University holds a conference each year in which recognised national and international leaders in the field of postgraduate medical education get together to discuss and highlight new ideas, new trends and other relevant topics in this field.

Conference themes in recent years have included Complexity, Science and Health Care, Service and Scholarship: achieving a balance in Postgraduate Medical Education; Building Bridges: strengthening postgraduate medical education through cooperation.

Each conference is attended by faculty and students of the university as well as delegates from other universities. At least one resident representative is one of the speakers as well. Residents and interns also present original research papers and posters. Prizes and certificates are awarded for best poster presentations and these are published in an abstract book.

In addition, workshops are also held and have proved very useful and popular. Examples include: Evaluating medical information on the internet; Time management; Residents as teachers; How to write a grant funding proposal and others that are of direct practical use to faculty and residents.
