Advanced Diploma Programme in
Teaching
English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in Higher Education 2007
Introduction
The Advanced
Diploma Programme (ADP) in Teaching English as a Foreign Language
(TEFL) in Higher Education is a one-year programme aimed at improving
the standard of English language teaching in Pakistan. Higher Education
Commission (HEC) fellowships are available for teachers teaching
in public sector colleges, universities and other higher education
institutions.
ADP in TEFL
is designed to provide the participants with an insight into the
theoretical foundation of language teaching. It also equips professionals
with strategies to apply the theory to practice, with a focus on
the issues and challenges faced by English language teachers in
Pakistan and other developing countries.
Structure
The Programme
comprises three terms consisting of six core and two optional courses.
Classes are offered four days a week from 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM, and
the first and fourth Fridays of every month are set aside to enable
students to attend self-directed group reading sessions. It also
includes an ongoing Academic English language development course
to provide participants with continuous language support to help
them meet their learning objectives. ADP in TEFL is offered through
two structures: (i Regular Programme and (ii) Modular Programme.
1. Regular
Programme
Applicants from
the public as well as the private sector institutions can complete
the Programme in one academic year, taking all the three terms in
the same year.
2. Modular
Programme
Applicants from
only private sector institutions are offered a choice of completing
the Programme over an extended period of three years by enroling
for one-to-two terms in any one academic year.

Eligibility
Criteria
- Masters
degree with some teaching experience
- Minimum:
Bachelors degree with two-year teaching experience
- College
and/or university English teachers
- Teachers
involved in the teaching of English to adults
Teaching
Methods
The
programme adopts a learner-centred approach to promote self-directed
learning. Teaching and learning strategies involve presenting and
participating in seminars, workshops, classroom and panel discussions,
as well as other group activities. To sharpen their critical and
analytical skills, participants are expected to read widely from
books, journals and the internet.
Resources
and Facilities
The
University is well equipped with modern resources for language learning.
It has a Self-Access Centre (SAC), Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
and Online English Language Learning (OELL) facilities. The University
library houses a number of books and journals on English language
teaching, research and other relevant areas to facilitate participants'
learning.
