Introduction

The Centre of English Language (CEL) is a resource for improving English language proficiency of the Aga Khan University staff and students in oral and written communication. CEL offers English language programmes to School of Nursing, Medical College, Institute for Educational Development, and Aga Khan University Hospital.  In addition, it has been offering short courses, workshops and consultancies to external customers in different areas such as English for Specific Purposes and English as a Second or Foreign Language.

These short courses and workshops aim at enhancing the language proficiency of participants and at improving performance in their academic and professional settings. The quality of CEL’s courses, as per international standards, can be assessed by the citation in the Worldaware Business Awards 2002 (UK) as ‘a first-class example of the means and benefits for transferring English language skills.’ The Centre also offers tailor-made courses, workshops and consultancy to institutions and corporations based on their requirements and needs.

Teaching Methods

At CEL, instruction involves a great deal of class participation and active use of spoken and written English. Language is presented in work related contexts. The courses offered are designed to develop grammatical accuracy, fluency, pronunciation, listening, reading comprehension, and writing ability. These courses prepare the participants for the accurate and fluent use of English in academic and professional settings.
