Graduate - Alumni to Help Raise Education Standard and Boost

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Irshad Hasan
Khan, was the chief
guest at the 14th Annual Convocation
of Aga Khan University (AKU), on November 3, 2001.
The event, held for the first time at AKU Sports and
Rehabilitation Centre, was unique as it also included the
faculty award ceremony that recognises faculty members for
their outstanding teaching performance.

The
elegant gathering of over seventeen hundred guests included
former Chairman Board of Trustees of AKU, Sahabzada Yaqub-Khan,
who was the keynote
speaker; the new Chairman of the Board, Ambassador
Saidullah
Khan Dehlavi, and other members of the Board; senior Government
officials, diplomats, academicians, donors, prominent citizens,
the University faculty, students and their proud parents.
Dr. Amir Ali Shoro, Professor
of Anatomy, Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences,
also Director Alumni Affairs, led the impressive faculty procession
This year, 193 graduates successfully completed their academic programme.
Eighty-one completed their MBBS programme and four their
Masters in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Hundred and eight
graduated from the School of Nursing, including 27 in Post
R.N. BScN; 16 in Bachelor of Science in Nursing; and 65
in nursing Diplomas.
The
President of AKU, Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha,S.I., delivered
the welcome address.
The valedictorian for the Medical College was Afsheen
Siddiqui, while the School of Nursing was represented
by Shabana Mohammad
Ali Damji.
The
chief guest presented AKU's coveted Gold Medal to Dr. Hammad
Ul Haq Qureshi. This medal, awarded only six times in previous
13 convocations, recognises an outstanding medical graduate
who tops three of the four certifying examinations, including
the finals. In this case, the student topped all four certifying
examinations.

Mahajabeen Rahmatali Ismaili was conferred the Outstanding Graduate Award
for the R.N. Diploma programme, while Yasmin Pyarali Parpio
and Roshan Jan Muhammad Manasia, received the Outstanding
Graduate Awards in Generic BScN and Post R.N. BScN respectively.
It was a momentous occasion for the graduates when the
outgoing Chairman, Board of Trustees, Sahabzada Yaqub-Khan,
was honoured with the highest level of recognition that the
University can bestow on an individual. Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha
read out the citation and Chairman Dehlavi conferred
the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D.LITT) Honoris Causa, on
Sahabzada Yaqub-Khan. Chairman Dehlavi also read out the message
from the Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan.
In recognition of Sahabzada's extraordinary services to the University,
the Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan, has announced the
establishment of the Sahabzada Yaqub-Khan Professorship dedicated
to the advancement of the study of Philosophy, at AKU's new
College of Arts and Sciences that is presently under planning.
Amidst standing ovation from the graduating students, Dr.
Naila Kayani, Department of Pathology; Dr. Nadir Ali Syed,
Department of Medicine; and Dr. Riaz Hussain Lakdawala, Department
of Surgery, received the Outstanding Teacher Awards. The award
recognises the outstanding teaching performance by the Medical
College faculty in various constituencies of the University.
From AKUSON, Ann Castellino, Perviz Husain and Syeda Naghma Rizvi were
the recepients of the awards for excellence in classroom teaching,
while Aliya Saifullah received the award for excellence in clinical teaching.
