10 Declared World Science Day for Peace and Development

Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
has declared November 10 as World Science Day for Peace and Development
(WSDPD) the world over every year, starting 2002. The purpose of
WSDPD is to renew the national, as well as the international commitment
to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible
use of science for the benefit of society. The WSDPD also aims at
raising public awareness of the importance of science and to bridge
the gap between science and societies. To commemorate this day,
the Pakistan Science Foundation held a half-day seminar at which
renowned Pakistani scientists were invited. The chief guest at the
Ceremony was Dr. A.Q. Khan, Special Advisor to the Chief Executive
and President, Pakistan Academy of Sciences, while the host was
Dr. Farid A. Malik, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation. Also
present at the Ceremony were Professor Atta-ur-Rehman, Federal Minister
for Science and Technology and a number of leading scientists from
the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and other scientific institutes
across the country.

Kassim-Lakha was invited to deliver a 15-minute talk on Science
Education, Peace and Development. Other speakers included Dr. Kausar
A. Malik on biotechnology, Dr. Hameed A. Khan, Executive Director,
Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development
in the South (COMSATS) on the Power of IT and Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad,
Deputy DG, National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC) on Agriculture
Development.
