In response to President Pervez Musharraf's nationwide appeal, faculty
and staff of Aga Khan University (AKU) are contributing a day's salary
toward assisting victims of the tsunami disaster in Asia.
As part of its societal commitment to the developing world, AKU has
decided to give its donation to Sri Lanka, a brother SAARC country
with close traditional ties to Pakistan.
Mr Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, President of AKU, said that "people from across
the world have banded together to help the affected countries and
already $2 billion has been pledged towards assistance for this disaster.
There is general recognition, however, that the extent of damage will
far exceed this sum, especially if we include collateral damage. As
such AKU faculty and staff have expressed a desire to contribute towards
providing relief to our fellow brethren who are suffering from the
aftermath of this calamity."
