Proper
Trauma Management Critical to Patient Care
Trauma,
one of the main causes of death, often strikes the younger
and potentially the most productive members of the society.
Generally, the pattern of delivery of care to patients with
traumatic conditions is unclear and inconsistent in most health
care institutions in the developing world. There is no systemic
approach or a protocol which ensures that all life-threatening
conditions have been adequately dealt with in their order
of priority.
To
address this issue, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) conducted
its first Trauma Course, under the supervision of multidisciplinary
teams comprising physicians from Departments of Anaesthesia,
Surgery, and Section of Emergency Medicine.
The objective was to design a single, reliable, safe and
reproducible approach to the management of severely
injured patients, including children and pregnant women, the
minute they arrive in the emergency room. The course addressed
such issues as initial assessment and management, trauma airway
and management, shock and vascular access, paediatric trauma,
trauma in pregnancy, and transfer to definitive care.
Besides lectures, the course provided hands-on training
to participants on the four-skill stations - reading trauma
radiology, airway management including intubation and cricothyroidotomy,
chest tube placement, diagnostic peritoneal lavage and vascular
access.
While this course comprised participants from AKUH, future
programmes are expected to be open for candidates from other
hospitals as well.
