AKU Organises Fifth Pain Symposium on Recent Developments in Pain Management

Karachi, 10th Sept, 2005: Aga Khan University Hospital's (AKUH) Department of Anaesthesia organised its fifth Pain Symposium titled 'Recent Developments in Pain Management: Conventional to Interventional Approaches', which was attended by a large number of anaesthesiologists, oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, obstetricians and physicians from around the world.

Dr Mohammad Khurshid, Dean of AKU Medical College, said while addressing the participants that the objective of organising the Pain Symposium was to create awareness about this emergency subspecialty of anaesthesia among medical practitioners in Pakistan and abroad, and to enhance understanding and application of recent developments in this area.

The Two day symposium included plenary session and workshops on MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) interpretation, Ankle Block and Stellate Ganglion Block. Renowned national and international speakers delivered their papers on common pain problems including labour and delivery pain.

The speakers included Dr Madhuri Lokapur from India, who lectured on 'Cost-effectiveness of Interventional Pain Management', and discussed current and future pain management options in the context of developing countries. Dr Zaki Hussain from United Kingdom, Dr Mohammad Ahsan from United States of America, Dr M.J. Joshi from India, Dr Khalid Bashir from Lahore, Brig M. Saleem from Islamabad, Dr Salman Waris from Multan and many others also presented papers at the symposium.

Earlier, Dr Rehana Kamal, Professor, Department of Anaesthesia, AKUH, welcomed the participants and observed that the symposium would provide a platform for medical practitioners for sharing idea and dissemination of information on how to improve pain management in Pakistan.

As a part of its aim to promote research and intellectual activity in the medical profession, AKU has been organising yearly symposiums on pain management since the past five years. While the current symposium emphasises on conventional and interventional approaches, previous ones focused on cancer pain management, back pain and advanced therapeutic modalities.
