Aga Khan University's
(AKU) Department of Medicine held its first Annual Research Retreat
at Marriott Hotel on May 10, 2002.
The goal of the
event was to showcase the Department's academic research activities,
multiple disciplines, including cardiology, gastroenterology, general
medicine, nephrology, neurology, oncology, endocrinology and pulmonology.
The forum provided
an ideal platform for the promotion of medical research, especially
patient-oriented research. Initiatives of this nature are expected
to highlight the scientific content of medical practice in Pakistan.
Translation of research into clinical practice is the ultimate goal
of such endeavours and will lead to improvements in national health.
The retreat was
attended by the AKU institutional leadership as well as by the Department
of Medicine faculty and house staff in addition to AKU faculty from
related disciplines.
Over 40 research
papers were presented at the meeting, discussing advances in common
clinical problems relevant to Pakistan, including hypertension,
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, hepatitis, and cancer.
