AKU Seminar on English Language
|
'Language, Culture and Identity: Issues and Challenges'
The Centre of English Language at Aga Khan University will host a
two-day seminar on the theme 'Language, Culture and Identity: Issues
and Challenges' on July 16-17, 2005. Dr Hamida Khuhro, Minister for
Education and Literacy, Government of Sindh, will be the chief guest
on the occasion.
The prime objective of the seminar is to address issues related to
culture and identity in learning a foreign or second language, such
as English; and to provide English language teaching (ELT) professionals
the opportunity to develop strategies for addressing relevant issues
and emerging challenges in Pakistan in particular, and the region
in general.
Sub-themes of the seminar range from English and Employment, Language
and Gender, Assessment and Evaluations, English for Specific Purposes,
Teacher Education, Information Technology and ELT, to Curriculum and
Material Development, and Research. The seminar also includes a research
symposium, which will critically reflect on the theme and sub-themes
of the seminar from an Asian perspective, to facilitate the process
of undertaking research projects in pertinent areas.
Researchers, teachers, and students involved in various aspects of
ELT will share their experiences, challenges and research; critique
new ideas and approaches; and establish links with other universities
teaching English in Pakistan and abroad. Eminent ELT experts from
Pakistan and abroad participating in this seminar include Dr Julia
Khan (UK), Dr R. K. Agnihotri (India), Dr Ryhana Raheem (Sri Lanka),
Dr Maya David (Malaysia), Dr Arifa Rahman (Bangladesh), Dr Tariq Rahman
(Pakistan), Dr Sabiha Mansoor (Pakistan), and Dr Samina Qadir (Pakistan).
