Medical College English Electives 2004

 

This summer Centre of English Language for the first time offered an English Elective Course 'English Literature and Creativity' to the mainstream AKU Medical College students of class of 2007 & 2008. The course began on August 9,2004.This 33-hour course introduced the students to different eras of English Literature.

Ms Najma Husain was the co-ordinator for this course.

Apart from classroom teaching, the course comprised a number of other activities including video viewing sessions, a writing workshop, student presentations, and guest lectures.

The guest lectures were open to all at AKU; they were well attended and highly appreciated by the audience. These lectures brought to light current issues and trends in South Asian as well as world literature. The guest lectures were:

 
Prof. Abbas Husain, Director, Teachers' Development Centre, Karachi, Guest speaker for Universal Appeal of Shakespeare.   Mr Rahat Kazmi, a prominent media personality & educationist, Guest Speaker for Literature in the 21st Century.
     
 
Ms Muneeza Shamsie, literary critic, writer & journalist, Guest Speaker for Pakistani English Literature: Language, Identity & Migration.
  Dr Anita Zaidi, Chair, MC Electives Committee at the closing session.
  • Universal Appeal of Shakespeare by Prof. Abbas Husain, Director, Teachers' Development Centre, Karachi.
  • Literature in the 21st Century by Mr Rahat Kazmi, a prominent media personality & educationist.
  • Pakistani English Literature: Language, Identity & Migration by Ms Muneeza Shamsie, literary critic, writer and journalist

 In addition, a Creative Writing Workshop by Ms Ambreena Kazi, Chair, English Department, Karachi University was also arranged for the students.

The course ended with a closing session on August 31, 2004.The session was well  attended by students from all five years of the Medical College and some faculty members.  The session began with the course overview by Ms Najma Husain, Co-ordinator, Medical College English Programme followed by student presentations based on various components of the course.The presentations not only demonstrated students' creativity but also showed their deep interest in English literature.The students also presented a lively skit in which they played the characters of the authors and poets they had studied on the course. The session ended with closing remarks from  Dr Anita Zaidi, Chair, MC Electives Committee and Dr Sabiha Mansoor, Head, Centre of English Language.
