Ministry of Education, Kenya; Mr. Gabriel Lengo Boini, Secretary,
Teacher Service Commission, Ministry of Education, Kenya; and Mr.
Rupen Chande, Project Manager, PDC, Lead-in Project East Africa, Dar-es-Salaam
visited AKU, Karachi from September 17-21, 2005. The objectives of
the visit were to meet with AKU/AKU-IED senior management to familiarize
themselves with the University's programmatic activities; discuss
matters of mutual interest and strategies for further improving collaboration
between AKU-IED and the Kenyan Ministry of Education.
The delegation met with the AKU/AKU-IED senior faculty and leadership;
Chairman AKES, P and his team; and the Education Secretary, Department
of Education and Literacy, Government of Sindh and visited AKU-IED's
cooperating schools in public and private sector. They commended AKU-IED's
programmes for initiating professional development progranmmes that
support teachers' professional learning and help them in becoming
critical thinkers to improve the quality of education in their classrooms
and overall in their schools. They strongly felt that AKU-IED's efforts
have been able to change teachers' attitudes to use innovative pedagogical
approaches in their classroom practices.
They were also given a guided tour of the AKU Stadium Road Campus
where they visited various departments and facilities. They were highly
impressed with the facilities available for healthcare services and
education and appreciated the briefings given to them by AKU staff
and faculty. They felt that by visiting the Stadium Road campus and
observing the functions of the various academic units has made them
aware of the functions and achievements of other constituencies of
the University.
The members of the delegation were very pleased with the outcomes
of meetings/visits and felt that their visit has greatly helped them
in understanding the academic programmes, research and other efforts
undertaken by the University, both nationally and internationally.
They appreciated the information and felt that meeting with representatives
of all academic units of the University gave them a 'holistic picture'
of the University's programmes. They appreciated AKU's efforts and
contribution by providing quality education and high standards of
health care services to the peoples of Pakistan and other developing
countries and requested the senior leadership of AKU-IED to continue
to dialogue and visit Kenya to work with the Kenyan Ministry of Education
more closely in order to improve the quality of programmes offered
by them.
