South Asian Cardiovascular Research Methodology Workshop at AKU

Pakistan is currently witnessing an epidemic rise in non-communicable diseases associated with a devastating economic and social impact. The treatment of cardiovascular diseases is not only inadequate but also prohibitively expensive. This leads to an emergent need to develop and evolve community-based preventive strategies, which developed western countries have proven are effective in controlling and reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease. While there is an imminent need to evolve effective and comprehensive preventive programmes suited to Pakistani environment, a considerable lack of cardiovascular research, especially in Pakistan and other developing countries, remains a challenge.

Inaugural session of the South Asian Cardiovascular Research Methodology Workshop, organised by the Cardiology Section of the Department of Medicine at Aga Khan University in collaboration with Pakistan Cardiac Society, SAARC Cardiac Society, the World Health Organization (WHO), Collaborating Centre-Pittsburg, and the University of Pittsburgh, USA.

Recognizing the need for capacity building and research training of physicians and cardiologists, the Cardiology Section of the Department of Medicine at Aga Khan University (AKU) is therefore organising a South Asian Cardiovascular Research Methodology Workshop on February 1-9, 2005. The workshop is being held in collaboration with Pakistan Cardiac Society, SAARC Cardiac Society, the World Health Organization (WHO), Collaborating Centre-Pittsburg, and the University of Pittsburgh, USA. The inaugural session of the workshop will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at AKU Auditorium.

The workshop aims to impart research skills through a comprehensive training programme conducted by renowned experts from the USA, India and Pakistan, and will be attended by participants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The workshop will, for the first time in Pakistan, engage telemedicine to involve the medical community at other institutions. Five key lectures from the workshop will be relayed to audiences in other institutions within and outside Karachi.

The workshop will not only boost research, but by means of an extensive collaboration also provide an impetus to regional cooperation.
