Aga Khan University's
Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) is to
host a two-day conference on Higher Education in Developing Countries:
With a Focus on Muslim Contexts. The event will take place on
February 24 and 25, 2005 at the Congress Centre, 28
Great Russell Street, London,
UK.
While there are numerous
initiatives focused on higher education in developing countries, there continues
to be a need for a sustainable platform for deliberation on issues affecting
higher education, particularly in Muslim contexts. AKU-ISMC seeks to make this
conference the starting point of an ongoing dialogue. The conference deliberations
will be disseminated through the Institute's website and a post-conference publication.
The conference aims to bring
together students, educators, scholars and decision-makers from around the world
in order to create an intellectual platform for an assessment of present educational
programmes and the future of higher education in developing countries, and more
specifically within Muslim contexts.
The conference focuses on
two main themes: (i) Vision, purpose and aims of higher education in developing
countries; and (ii) reforms and innovations in higher education - successes
and lessons learned. Morning plenary sessions will be followed by afternoon
workshops.
The online registration
deadline is January 31, 2005 and abstracts
are welcome by November
30, 2004. To submit abstracts, register for the conference or for
other information, please visit www.aku.edu/news/seminars/hedc.
Aga Khan University Institute
for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) hopes to make a distinct contribution
to the understanding of Muslim societies and the emergence of new attitudes
among Muslims and non-Muslims toward issues facing the Muslim world.
