Nurses Target Poverty on International Nurses Day
Nurses
worldwide have drawn the attention of public and policy-makers towards
investing in education, health care and sound social policy for
alleviating poverty. In line with this call by the international
nursing community, Aga Khan University (AKU) celebrated International
Nurses Day on May 15, 2004.

This
year's theme, 'Nurses: working with the poor against poverty', encompasses
issues relating to health and poverty in light of the fact that
one billion of the world's six billion people remain deprived of
their basic needs of food, water, sanitation, health care, housing,
and education.

The day
acknowledges nurses' role in alleviating poverty, and increased
awareness amongst the nursing community in particular and people
in general of the vicious cycle of poverty in Pakistan, as well
as in the developing world. The event was also a tribute to the
hundreds and thousands of nurses whose contributions made over the
years helped improve the quality of lives of people through implementation
of sustainable projects in communities.
