Graduation Ceremonies Held in Nairobi and Kampala

 

The first graduation ceremony of Aga Khan University (AKU) in Kenya was held on Monday 6 December at the Aga Khan Pavilion in Nairobi.  Forty one (41) candidates received the Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) Diploma, whilst five (5) candidates were awarded the Specialist Diploma in Accident, Emergency and Disaster Management.

Dr. David Taylor, Acting Provost and Chief Academic Officer of AKU presided at the ceremony. Dr Yasmin Amarsi, Dean of AKUSON was also present. The certificates were awarded to the candidates by Dr Taylor who was assisted by Prof Laetitia King, Associate Dean, Nursing.  The Chief Guest, Prof. George Saitoti: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, at the last moment was unable to attend due to unforeseen commitments. Prof. George Godia, the Secretary for Education represented the Minister and read the address prepared by the Minister. In the address, the Minister praised AKU for introducing the ANS programmes in Kenya and acknowledged the valuable contribution made by AKU towards strengthening the health system of the country.

The ceremony, which was attended by approximately 420 people, has been hailed as a great success and received extensive coverage both on the television news (twice) as well as in various newspapers.

The second graduation ceremony of AKU in Uganda was held in Kampala in the Aga Khan School Hall on Wednesday 8 December 2004. The ceremony which was attended by approximately three hundred people received extensive media coverage. Twenty candidates received the Diploma in General Nursing (Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Conversion Programme) and the first seven (7) nurses to complete the BScN degree offered by AKU in East Africa received their degree certificates.  This was indeed a proud moment, and as in Kenya, the presiding officer of AKU was Dr David Taylor.  The invited Chief Guest, Professor Edward Makhubuya, at the last moment, was unable to attend. He was represented by the State Minister for Primary Education, Hon Namirembe Bitamazire. The Minister the importance of providing opportunities to enable nurses to develop professionally, and expressed the appreciation of the Government for the sterling work being done by AKU in this regard.
