Asthma is on the
rise in Pakistan and, according to estimates, up to 10% of the population
is suffering from this disorder, revealed Dr. Javaid A. Khan, Consultant
Chest Physician, at Aga Khan University (AKU).
He was speaking
at a seminar held on March 29, 2002 to educate asthma patients and
their families on the various aspects of this disease. Dr. Khan
said that modern lifestyle, atmospheric pollution, smoking, increased
use of carpets, sofa sets, keeping pets inside the house and decreased
consumption of fruits and vegetables, are some of the reasons for
the rise in asthma cases in Pakistan.
Dr. Naheed Nabi
of the Department of Family Medicine highlighted several misconceptions
about asthma and its treatment in Pakistan. "Use of Inhalers is
the safest way to deliver asthma medication to the lungs, as inhalers
are much safer than tablets or syrup," she explained. Inhalers are
not habit-forming as is commonly perceived in this country, she
added.
Breast-feeding in the first six months of the infant's
life protects the child from future asthma attacks, said Farhana
Abbas, an asthma nurse at Aga Khan University Hospital. Regarding
smoking, she said that if any of the parents is a smoker then the
children have an increased risk of developing asthma. "Children
should be protected from environment tobacco smoke at all cost,"
she stressed. Underlining the importance of exercise in asthma,
she suggested that the child should be allowed to take part in physical
activities and sports.
Speaking on diet
and its affect on asthma, Yasmin Mithani, a senior nurse at AKU
said that contrary to common belief dietary items like milk, banana,
egg and fish do not precipitate asthma attacks. "Patient with asthma
should have a balanced diet which includes fruits and vegetables,"
she added. Quoting a study done at AKU, Dr. Javaid Iqbal said that
only 10% pf patients in Pakistan were using inhalers according to
recommended methods. He later demonstrated the correct technique
of using inhalers. A question and answer session with a panel of
experts was also held at the end of the programme.
