Aga Khan University Examination Board (AKU-EB) has neither the
intention nor the authority to change the national curriculum. Recent
allegations to the contrary raised by certain quarters are completely
unfounded and do not reflect the reality on the ground.
One of the 27 examination boards in the country, AKU-EB is not
authorised by the Government of Pakistan to change the national
curriculum. AKU-EB's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher
Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, like those of other boards,
will be based on the government-approved national curriculum for
all subjects, including Islamiat and Pakistan Studies. This has
been clarified by the Federal Minister for Education on a number
of occasions. Periodic review and definition of the national curriculum
is the responsibility of the Curriculum Wing of the Federal Ministry
of Education.
AKU-EB further clarified that it has no intention to take over
government examination boards. Commenting on the Examination Board,
Mughis-ul-Hassan, Principal of Lahore Public School, said that the
work undertaken by the government boards is simply beyond the means
and scope of one private board. " The fact is that AKU-EB has not
been given any such authority by the Government of Pakistan. The
enormous work involved can not be handled by one board, therefore
the government is operating 26 examination boards. The government
has made this clear on a number of occasions and stated that affiliation
with the Board is purely voluntary and restricted to private schools
only," said Mughis-ul-Hassan.
Statements have also been published in the print media by some
quarters charging that AKU-EB or AKU developed or issued a health
questionnaire targeted at young students. The University categorically
denies this ill-informed allegation.
