Professor Yasmin
Amarsi, Dean, AKUSON, and Professor Laetitia King, Regional Director,
ANS Program East Africa, and a strong contingent of Faculty from
the three AKU campuses in
East Africa
attended
the third conference of the African Honor Society for Nurses in
Dar-es-Salaam
during
August 2003. The theme of the conference was 'Striving Towards Nursing
and Midwifery Excellence in
Africa
'. Nurses
and midwives from counties across the African continent, as well
as from the USA and Pakistan attended the conference and debated
issues relevant to the development and strengthening of the nursing
and midwifery profession in
Africa
.

The African
Honor Society for Nursing was founded in 2001 to promote the development
of excellence in Nursing and Midwifery in Africa, and is due to
become a Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) during
2004. Members of the Society are nominated on academic performance
and professional leadership achievements. Professor Amarsi delivered
the keynote address at the conference banquet where new members
of the Society were inducted. She reminded the audience of the
numerous challenges facing health systems in Africaand other developing
regions, and challenged all nurses to play a leading role in meeting
such challenges.
