This course offers a platform to explore the rich historical and contemporary diversities within Muslim societies and cultures.
A joint production of the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (Simon Fraser University) and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (Aga Khan University), the programme is designed for the non-specialist as a comprehensive introduction to the various facets of the heritage and contemporary experiences of Muslim peoples.
In 2010, the course will be held in the midst of the majestic coastal mountains of the British Columbia.
Instructional modules will cover topics such as Orientalism, the Qur’an, the prophet’s biography, formation of the Muslim community, civil society, law, gender, art and literature. To compliment the classroom sessions, the course will feature a range of activities such as film screenings and art exhibits.
At a time when the demand for information about Muslims, their heritage and traditions is at a height, this summer programme provides an ideal opportunity to explore relevant subjects through a rigorous and unbiased approach.
