Survey and Focused Short Courses

From 2008, AKU-ISMC will offer a series of general survey courses as well as more focused courses, exploring selected topics in greater depth. The demand for courses about Muslim cultures, past and present, has grown significantly over the last ten years due to globalisation and increasing interaction between different cultures. AKU-ISMC's courses will provide a distinctive and useful approach within a contemporary context which aims to fulfil the need for a better understanding of Muslim cultures.

Survey Courses

Survey courses will provide participants with an overview of Muslim Cultures, past and present, in a broadly conceived humanistic and civilisational approach. The courses will illuminate contemporary issues by drawing upon pertinent historical developments and will provide a well-rounded introduction to Muslim civilisations, giving attention to political as well as intellectual and social histories. Courses will aim to help participants see Islam as a major human civilisation thus enabling them to assess for themselves all perspectives on Muslim cultures.            

Focused Courses

Focused courses will explore specific topics in relative depth. They will build on general topics covered in the survey courses in order to give participants a good grasp of a specific area related to Muslim cultures. Courses are aimed at those who are seeking a more targeted approach to the study of Muslim cultures, whether this is due to a professional or personal interest.
