AKU-ISMC hosts video screening of Karen Armstrong lecture

On 11th June, AKU-ISMC hosted a video screening of a lecture presented by scholar and author Karen Armstrong during a recent visit to the Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in Karachi, Pakistan. The lecture, titled 'Lessons from Islamic History in Facing Contemporary Challenges' was one of a number of academic events hosted by AKU which form part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Chancellor of the University, His Highness the Aga Khan.
During her lecture Armstrong provided a comprehensive assessment of the challenges facing the world today. Armstrong emphasised that historically, the West has generally received an ill-informed narrative about the Muslim world. She stated that what is required is for individuals from around the world to provide ‘counter-narratives' to correct these preconceived notions.
Armstrong concluded her lecture with a firm but optimistic message. She said that Muslims have a rich history and cultural heritage from which to draw upon. Armstrong explained that that Muslims have and continue to respond to crises in creative ways, through openness to new ideas and adapting to changing conditions.
Ms Armstrong expressed her desire that Muslims show the world a narrative that more accurately captures the multiplicity, pluralism and peace that is at the core of Islamic faith, saying that “Muslims have shown extraordinary resilience in the face of disaster,' and can and will do so again.”
A lively discussion followed the video screening, which was attended by the Institute’s MA students, faculty, staff and guests.
